How to Replace Your Cylinder Head Cover (Step-by-Step Guide)

Replacing the head cover on your HOWO MT07 engine doesn’t have to be a headache — here’s how to do it smoothly:

1.  Start with a cold engine. Never work on a hot engine. Wait until it cools down completely to avoid burns and warping the new gasket.

2.  Drain oil if necessary. If oil has pooled on top of the valves, drain some through the dipstick tube first — otherwise, it’ll spill when you open the cover.

3.  Remove old bolts carefully. Use a socket wrench to loosen the 10 M6 bolts in a crisscross pattern. Don’t force them — if one sticks, spray penetrating oil and wait 5 minutes.

4.  Lift off gently. Once all bolts are out, lift the cover straight up. Don’t pry it — that can damage the mating surface on the cylinder head.

5.  Clean both surfaces. Scrape off any old gasket material with a plastic scraper. Wipe with brake cleaner. No metal tools — scratches cause leaks.

6.  Check the new gasket. Make sure the rubber seal is seated properly around the edges and isn’t twisted or pinched.

7.  Install the new cover. Align it slowly, double-check hose and wire clearances. Then hand-start all bolts.

8.  Torque evenly. Tighten in stages: first to 6 Nm, then final torque to 10–12 Nm using a star pattern. Over-tightening cracks aluminum.

9.  Reconnect hoses and sensors. Plug in the breather line, check wiring harnesses aren’t trapped.

10.  Run and inspect. Start the engine, let it idle for 10 minutes, then check for oil seepage or unusual noises.
